Bengaluru Has a Traffic Problem. Is Water Part of the Problem?

I have been part of the Bengaluru ecosystem for nearly three years, across two very different phases of the city.

The first was 2018–2020, when I experienced Bengaluru largely as a bachelor. The second is 2026 onwards, when I have returned as a parent and witnessed a city that has expanded dramatically—both geographically and economically.


One thing, however, has remained remarkably consistent: the traffic.


I have travelled to work almost every day during my time in Bengaluru, through peak hours and off-peak hours. Heavy traffic, moderate traffic, and sometimes surprisingly busy roads even late at night have become part of everyday life.

We are accustomed to blaming Bengaluru's traffic on poor infrastructure, inadequate road capacity, bottlenecks and unplanned urban development. There is certainly merit to these arguments. Roads that are barely two lanes wide often serve as critical connectors to large technology parks and residential clusters, creating bottlenecks across the city.


But after returning to Bengaluru, I started noticing something else.

Water tankers. Everywhere.

On major roads, residential streets, near technology parks, during peak hours and sometimes even late at night.

For many apartment communities and residential areas, tankers have effectively become an important part of the city's water-supply infrastructure.

This made me wonder:

Are we looking at Bengaluru's traffic only as a transportation problem when a part of it could actually be a water-supply problem?

Think about the basic supply chain.

Water is required at thousands of residential communities, commercial establishments and other facilities. Where piped water supply is inadequate, water is sourced from borewells or other external sources. Tankers then transport that water from the source to individual consumers.


Unlike a pipeline, a tanker doesn't move invisibly underground.

Every tanker is another large vehicle on Bengaluru's already congested roads.

And this movement is highly distributed. A tanker may travel from a water source on the outskirts of the city, navigate through congested roads and finally reach an apartment complex—before making the journey back.

Thousands of such trips could collectively create a meaningful additional load on the city's road network.


The chain therefore becomes:

Urbanisation → Water stress → Groundwater dependence → Tanker dependency → More vehicle movement → Additional congestion

The tanker may not be the root cause of Bengaluru's traffic problem, but it could be one of the overlooked contributors.

Can we solve both problems together?

The answer may lie in combining traditional solutions with modern technology.

Restore local water ecosystems: Reviving lakes and interconnected water bodies can improve groundwater recharge and reduce dependence on external sources.

Rainwater harvesting: Make rainwater harvesting a genuine part of residential and commercial water strategies rather than simply a compliance exercise.

Recharge wells: Apartment communities and commercial establishments can use recharge wells and rooftop systems to replenish local groundwater.

Smarter consumption: Smart water meters can help communities understand consumption, identify wastage and manage demand better.

Most importantly, we need to start thinking of water as a logistics problem too.

Instead of asking only:

"How do we bring more water into Bengaluru?"

perhaps we should also ask:

"How do we reduce the distance water has to travel before it reaches the consumer?"

That question could lead us to a very different way of thinking about both Bengaluru's water crisis and its traffic crisis.
